Carney T. DeSarno MD, FACS
The founder of Jersey Shore Advanced Surgical Associates (JSASA), Carney T. DeSarno, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon and a native of New Jersey, having been born at Jersey Shore Medical Center and raised in Wall Township. Dr. DeSarno’s early aspirations were to become a physician, and he attended Johns Hopkins University, where he graduated with a BA in 1989. He earned his MD from Hahnemann University School of Medicine in 1993 and chose to return to his home in New Jersey to train in general surgery at Monmouth Medical Center.
After completing his surgical residency in 1998, Dr. DeSarno began his surgical career in Neptune, New Jersey, just a few hundred yards from the hospital in which he was born. Dr. DeSarno was named a “NJ Top Doctor” by his peers in 2012, for his commitment to general surgery and breast surgery. He was also named New Jersey Monthly “Nurses Choice Top Doctor” in 2010.
Dr. DeSarno brings years of experience and unmatched dedication to his community. He was inducted into the Wall High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 2002 for his service to his community and academic achievements. As a specialist in gallbladder removal, hernia surgery, colon surgery and breast surgery, Dr. DeSarno has treated thousands of patients in our area and the neighboring communities. As the senior surgeon at JSASA, Dr. DeSarno continues to inspire his peers and colleagues as one of the most respected clinicians in New Jersey. His clinical acumen and surgical skills have brought patients from across the state to seek his help.

Seth M. Kipnis MD, FACS
Dr. Seth M. Kipnis is a minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgeon robotic and bariatric surgeon. He is fellowship trained in advanced laparoscopy and endoscopy, and a board certified general surgeon. He is currently the Director of Bariatric and Robotic Surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, a ASC - MBSAQIP Accredited Bariatric Center of Excellence.
In his practice, Dr. Seth M. Kipnis focuses on advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery). Specializing in all types of bariatric surgery as well as complex, advanced laparoscopic techniques paraesophageal/hiatal/diaphragm hernias, reflux, colectomy, splenectomy, and hernia repairs, he provides a unique skill while treating all of his patients like family. Gastric and abdominal operations are performed with uncompromising skill often with the use of advanced endoscopy and DaVinci Robotic procedures. He remains at the forefront of the most advanced techniques and procedures available in order to best meet the needs of his patients.
Dr. Kipnis was born and raised in Long Island and graduated from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts. He received his Medical Degree in 2000 from SUNY-Health Science Center in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Kipnis completed a six-year university training program in General Surgery at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Piscataway/New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2006. Dr. Kipnis completed a minimally invasive surgery and bariatric fellowship while at Penn State.
Dr. Kipnis is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American College of Surgeons. He has faculty appointments at both the Seton Hall-Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and the UMDNJ-Rutgers Medical School's Department of Surgery. As part of the teaching faculty at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, he actively instructs both residents and medical students on a daily basis.
Dr. Kipnis has expertise in use of the robotic surgery system for the more complex surgical procedures. He was the first general surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center(JSUMC) to become skilled in the use of the Intuitive Surgical DaVinci surgical system and uses it regularly to perform bariatric and minimally invasive operations. He was the first surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center to perform a robotic single incision cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), sleeve gastrectomy, paraesophageal hernia repairs, inguinal hernia and incisional hernia repairs . He currently maintains one of the highest volumes of robotic surgery at JSUMC and is a certified proctor for robotic surgery. Dr Kipnis has trained and supervised many of the current robotic surgeon in the health system.
Dr. Kipnis has a reputation as an innovator and leader in the Hackensack-Meridian Health System. His compassionate bedside manner and surgical excellence have made him a most sought after surgeon by his patients and colleagues alike.

Steven Tizio, MD, FACS, FASCRS
Dr. Steven C. Tizio’s clinical interest are in the care and management of both benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. He has extensive training in minimally invasive colon surgery, including laparoscopic colon resection, trans-anal mass, polyp excision, and robotic colon surgery. Dr. Tizio is also interested in the treatment of pelvic floor disorders and fecal incontinence. Dr. Tizio is trained in the use of colonoscopy for screening for colon cancer and both the medical and surgical management of anal disorders, including hemorrhoids, fissures and anal fistulas. His research interests include the use of near infrared laser technology in the prevention of complications after colon resections.
Dr. Tizio is on staff at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.
Originally from Staten Island, NY, he was very active in his family’s construction business until he started medical school. Dr. Tizio graduated from Princeton University in 1998 with a BA in chemistry. He decided to pursue graduate work in biology at Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a MS in chemistry in 2011.
Dr. Tizio became an active firefighter while at Penn State, where he earned national qualification. After Penn State, Dr. Tizio worked as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Arlington, VA until he started medical school at the Drexel University College of medicine in 2002. Dr. Tizio was awarded membership in the honor medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha, and began his surgical residency in 2006 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts as a clinical fellow of the Harvard Medical School. During his residency Dr. Tizio spent two years as a research fellow studying biochemistry of muscle waste in critically ill patients. He completed his chief residency in 2013 and was awarded a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Methodist Health System in San Antonio, Texas, in which he completed in 2014.
Dr. Tizio earned the American Board of Surgery certification in 2013, and his certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery in 2016. He is currently fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Dena Arumugam, MD, FACS
Dr. Arumugam is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery, general surgery and bariatric surgery. She earned her medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed a general surgery residency at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She refined her laparoscopic surgery skills at New York University Winthrop Hospital with fellowship training in advanced gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery, before returning to New Jersey to practice.
Dr. Arumugam is passionate about treating medical problems and improving quality of life in those with obesity. She has experience in a wide variety of first-time weight loss surgery and also offers revisional bariatric surgery after failed gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy. Dr. Arumugam also has a special interest in improving medical problems through weight loss surgery in the adolescent population who suffer from unhealthy weight. Being trained in Obesity Medicine, Dr. Arumugam focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to weight loss which combines dietary changes, physical activity, weight loss medication and bariatric surgery to provide the best outcomes for her patients.
Dr. Arumugam corrects a broad range of general surgery problems, including hernias, gallbladder disease, skin problems and soft tissue disease, plus intestinal and colon abnormalities, while specializing in management of diaphragmatic (hiatal) hernias and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Dr. Arumugam believes that many surgical diseases can best be treated with a minimally invasive surgery approach. That is why she uses the most advanced technology for her patients. She is skilled in laparoscopic surgery techniques as well as da Vinci® robotic surgery. In fact, Dr. Arumugam is the first surgeon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center to perform a robotic roux-en-y gastric bypass for weight loss.
Dr. Arumugam has a faculty position at the Seton Hall-Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and is part of the teaching faculty at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, involved in instruction of the surgical residents and medical students. Outside the operating room, Dr. Arumugam is compassionate, thorough, and kind. She feels that communication is key to the best physician-patient relationships and is always willing to go the extra mile for her patients. Dr. Arumugam is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Infection Society. She was born in Westchester, New York and currently resides in Holmdel, NJ with her husband and three children.
